FedEx Sets 2040 Carbon Neutral Target

FedEx is proud to announce our goal to take our global operations carbon neutral by 2040. This goal is ambitious given our industry and scale – and will arrive at the goals set by the Paris Climate Agreement 10 years early.

To help reach our goal, we are designating more than $2 billion of initial investment to support initiatives designed to help make company operations more sustainable across our fleet of vehicles and aircraft, as well as our facilities. This work includes:

  • The electrification of the entire FedEx Express pick-up and delivery fleet

  • Sustainable energy at our more than 5,000 facilities

  • A $100 million commitment to help establish the Yale Center for Natural Carbon Capture

Together, these initiatives are designed to transform our business and propel our industry forward. Our work with Yale and our community investments in Sustainable Logistics aim to find and scale solutions that transcend FedEx and allow our team member expertise to benefit society as a whole. Some of our work includes:

  • Yale Center for Natural Carbon Capture: Developing new natural carbon sequestration solutions at a scale that can help offset the impact of long-haul transportation, including aviation.

  • World Resources Institute: Creating quality public transportation solutions in some of the world’s fastest growing cities. Our work has led to faster, more reliable commutes; less congestion and reduced emissions; and safer practices for over 10 million people to date.

  • Rocky Mountain Institute’s Third Derivative Accelerator: Finding, funding, honing, and scaling the most-promising technologies to achieve larger, faster reductions in global carbon emissions.

  • Natuur and Milieu: Creating logistics solutions for zero emission cities and innovative solutions for sustainable aviation – first focused in the Netherlands with potential to expand across Europe.

  • CALSTART: Researching and piloting solutions designed to optimize curb space usage. These efficiencies can boost mobility, reduce congestion and pollution, and add value to communities.

  • Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety – Building off Safer Cycling Advocacy Program in Europe, our work will promote cycling as an alternate transport mode in urban areas and pilot an e-cargo bike-share program in cities in Europe and Latin America.

“We have a responsibility to take bold action in addressing climate challenges,” said Frederick W. Smith, Chairman and CEO, FedEx Corp.  “This goal builds on our longstanding commitment to sustainability throughout our operations, while at the same time, investing in long-term, transformational solutions for FedEx and our entire industry.”

We’re proud to be making investments now that will deliver transformative solutions into the future – for our customers, partners, team members and the world. Together, fueled by innovation, we're building a sustainable future.
