Pulling for a cause: Indianapolis plane pull helps support Special Olympics
In August, the Indianapolis Hub hosted the Special Olympics Plane Pull Challenge at its new Golden Eagle Hub location. This event is a crucial fundraiser for the Special Olympics, where teams compete to pull an 82-ton Boeing 757, provided by FedEx, across a 12-foot track.
“The event was a resounding success, with the INDY Hub team securing first place among the 75 participating teams. They pulled the massive aircraft in just 6.86 seconds, showcasing not only physical strength but also the spirit of teamwork and dedication that defines FedEx,” said John Wesly Papabathini, a Director at FedEx.
The proceeds from the event support 19,000 Special Olympics athletes in Indiana, ensuring they receive the resources and assistance they need. Special Olympics Indiana promotes sportsmanship and a love of participation, celebrating each athlete’s effort and achievement with a medal or ribbon. The goal is for all persons with intellectual disabilities to become respected and accepted citizens in their communities.
The Indianapolis Hub Operations management, along with the INDY Hub Aircraft MX team, took the lead in organizing the event, dedicating countless hours to its success.
“Their efforts not only highlighted the FedEx brand but also underscored our deep-rooted commitment to supporting local communities,” Papabathini said.
With the unifying power of sports at its core, Special Olympics Indiana has grown into a movement for everyone, fostering inclusive communities where each person is accepted, respected, and welcomed.
“The Plane Pull Challenge was more than just a competition; it was a testament to the power of community and corporate partnership in making a meaningful impact. FedEx's involvement exemplifies our ongoing commitment to giving back and supporting those who inspire us every day,” Papabathini said.
