Stuff the Truck - 1st Place Winner in the Purple Tote Bag Story Contest
This is truly a team effort and a Community Event – where the FedEx “Stuff the Truck” has become a well-known semi -annual event and food drive for the Sweetwater County Food Bank. This year, FedEx Services Sales Executive worked with the local FedEx Ground Manager and their team, and D & E Ventures and their employees – who also donated the truck to stuff at the Home & Holiday Show. One of customers at Radiant Manufacturing – heard about the food drive and said their daughter is part of the Health Academy at the local high school and they are always looking for ways to volunteer – if we needed any help. With the FedEx Ground facility, our business partner, working with the youth from our local high school and our wonderful community - we were able to deliver!! Just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday. We were able to raise close to 6000 pounds of food and filled over 900 Purple Tote Bags of needed supplies. The team also delivered nonfood items such as clothes, toys, coats, and blankets to the local Women’s Shelter.
It was a huge success – and you don’t how good it felt when the local food bank manager called to make sure we were donating this year – as the food fank was in desperate need. They usually serve just over 300 families and this year they anticipated 485 plus families. In all the years I have been facilitating the food drive, I had never seen the shelves as bare as they were this year. They were thrilled to see the amount of food we had collected. She kept saying this has to be twice as big as before!! We had the same reaction when we delivered all of the other donations to the Women’s Shelter.
We love the Purple Tote Bag program and nothing is better than getting calls from the community, saying it is nice to see FedEx making the difference and seeing those Purple Tote Bags reused all year at the food bank, while people are waiting in line holding their reusable bags. You see a line of purple all year long. The FedEx Ground facility helped by stuffing over 1500 goodie bags for Santa, which were given away FREE to all the children during the weekend.
In addition to helping the food drive, we were able to raise about $20,000 through a dinner and auction – for a family who have lost over 4 family members in in less than six months. One of the wives who lost her husband had a friend of the family try to save her husband’s life at work and ended up burned over 70% of his body. The money will be used to help both of their medical expenses.
Busy weekend, but giving back is what drives us to do what we can to help.
