One Mountain United - 3rd Place Winner in the Purple Tote Bag Story Contest
The Mountain Family Center in Granby, Colorado is a member of the Family Resource Center Association in Colorado, and among the many family services they provide, is the only food bank and coat closet in Grand County. They service over eight towns in Grand County where in the schools the free and reduced lunch program enrollment ranges from 36% to 50% of students. Because of these statistics, the Mountain Family Center has made it their mission to provide hunger relief to students and families through their totes program. There is more than 325 students enrolled and each receives a tote bag full of food to eat over the 3 day weekend. Grand County is located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains where the temperature can drop to 60 degrees below zero in the winter, so the coat and clothing closet that is funded through donations is critical for those that cannot afford the correct clothing for the climate.
The FedEx Ground team in Kremmling Colorado collected food, gently used or new clothing, blankets, and coats to donate to the Mountain Family Center. The team held two food drives, which the local grocery store supplemented with a large donation, and local hotels donated blankets and toiletries. The team then filled purple totes with the donations, loaded them, and made the 60 mile round trip to deliver them to the Mountain Family Center in Granby, Colorado. They assisted in separating the food and clothing at the Mountain Family Center headquarters, where the food was inventoried. The team’s efforts quickly added up to more than an astounding 131 volunteer hours.
The Kremmling team was able to fill 500 Purple Tote Bags with donated items and deliver over $680 in cash donations, bringing the total estimated value of donations to $20,000. According to the Mountain Family Center, there was about 800 pounds of food donated, which will be used to stock the food bank and fill the totes for children qualifying for the totes program. The team was very honored and proud to be a part of such a great community that so willingly helps one another. This community pulled together to truly show what a great impact the power of one can have.
