Newark YMCA

Newark YMCA

Dec 12, 2016

We were trying to find the right location for our FedEx Cares Day when the Newark YMCA was suggested as an option. For 135 years, the Newark YMCA has served the community by providing programs for health, housing, recreation, and education. Upon visiting the Y and meeting their dedicated staff, there was no question that the FedEx team had to help! When we realized the number of homeless people they provide housing to, we knew we had to use our Purple Tote Bag Campaign to provide assistance.

The Newark YMCA is over 12 stories high! Their rooms house veterans, troubled teens, and homeless adults. They are also one of very few programs that allow homeless families to stay together. So on September 22nd, our FedEx Cares Team had over 75 volunteers from FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Services, and FedEx Office join together to help the Newark YMCA. Not only did we paint, landscape and decorate, we collected over 256 Purple Tote Bags full of shampoo, laundry detergent, bedding, board games, books, towels, and washcloths! It was an incredibly rewarding experience for all our volunteers.

With a little work and a lot of love we were able to transform a few rooms to make them feel more like a home, as well as, provide some basic necessities that we may take for granted. The staff of the YMCA was so impressed with how great everything looked and the amount of Purple Tote Bags, that after a few group hugs they told us they want us to come back every year!
