Building Community By Teaching and Inspiring Others
I spend many days and hours at home crafting, crocheting, painting, and creating music. I have a true love for the arts! I found out that there are many people interested in crocheting, but they didn't know how to, or where to start. While riding the bus or train to different places, as well as into work each day, I enjoy the long ride by working on my crochet projects. There was always someone complimenting me on my work and saying how they wished they knew how to crochet because it looks so relaxing. I would always offer to teach them because it's something that I enjoy doing. Eventually, I started a community crochet group to help anyone who would like to learn. The groups brought attention to others who already knew how to knit or crochet and began growing. I really like that we are a very diverse group of people who are on different skill levels. We use some techniques that are similar or the same, but there have been times when we are able to learn new or different techniques from each other. The group has been in existence since June, 2017, and has grown to 12 members so far. I'm so excited to be able to help others learn. It's very rewarding to help others, and to see the big smiles on their faces when they learn something new. They show me that they feel a sense of accomplishment. We are trying to plan our first field trip so promote more bonding within the group. and to keep the fun going. Recently, I started a Birthday Club within the group. I take time to acknowledge the member's special day by providing them with a birthday bag that contains items that will help them on their crocheting or crafting journey. Some members crochet because it's a means of therapy for them. Others tell me that it relaxes them and helps to take their mind off of other serious matters. It gives them a time to laugh and breathe freely for a while.
