We were having a somewhat difficult time finding a location for FedEx Cares Day when the Newark YMCA came up. For 135 years, the Newark YMCA has served the community by providing programs for health, housing, recreation, and education. Upon visiting and meeting their dedicated staff, there was no question that the FedEx team had to help! When we realized the number of homeless people they house, we knew we had to use our Purple Tote Campaign to provide assistance.
The Newark YMCA is over 12 stories high! Their rooms house veterans, troubled teens, and homeless adults. They are also one of very few programs that allow homeless families to stay together. So on September 22nd our FedEx Cares Team had over 75 volunteers from FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Services, and FedEx Office. Not only did we paint, landscape and decorate, we collected over 256 totes full of shampoo, laundry detergent, bedding, brushes, board games, children’s books, toothpaste, body wash, lice kits, soaps, towels, and washcloths!
It was an amazingly rewarding experience for all our volunteers. With a little bit of work and a lot of love we were able to transform a few of the rooms into someone’s home and provide some basic necessities that we may take for granted. The staff of the YMCA was so impressed with how great everything looked and the number of Purple Totes donated that there were several group hugs going around!
