Fedex Cares-Austin-Mobile Loaves & Fishes Community First Gardens
The mission of Mobile Loaves & Fishes is to provide food and clothing, to cultivate community and to promote dignity to our homeless brothers and sisters in need. FedEx Cares volunteers worked in the Village Community Gardens. The CF! Village is a 27 acre community that provides affordable, permanent housing and a supportive community for the disabled, chronically homeless in Central Texas. The village has 4 acres of gardens where volunteers worked alongside the resident gardening crew to expand and finish out their perennial garden beds. We planting culinary and medicinal herbs, flowers for their cut flower program, and plants to attract diversity - they are trying to attract bees for pollination, hummingbirds and butterflies for their beauty, and all of the insects, like ladybugs, that eat all of our garden pests. Adding mulch and a stone border to beatify the gardens
The Community First! Village aims to address the root causes of chronic homelessness. Those who work with the chronically homeless say it is critical to address basic needs such as housing before trying to solve problems such as mental illness, health problems and substance abuse.
The village is considered a permanent home for the residents who live there.
We believe that providing shelter is merely the first step in helping residents heal from the ravages of life on the streets. The supportive community of volunteers and staff that will surround this community with love and care will truly provide the foundation to make this program successful. The Genesis Gardens volunteers build friendships with the residents as they work alongside them, and the residents see improved physical and mental health as they work outdoors. Most importantly, they develop confidence as they learn/teach gardening skills and find new hope after living for years on the streets.
